In Dubious Battle

I watched In Dubious Battle, another James Franco movie. He directed it, from John Steinbeck's book, and starred in it.

He does really well with Faulkner and Steinbeck, it turns out. His version of As I Lay Dying was so good. I assume The Sound and the Fury is, but it's not on dvd(will it ever be?) yet.

Now I want him to do a remake of Grapes of Wrath, my very favorite Steinbeck book, and one of my favorite movies ever. He would play Tom in it, of course.

Anyway, In Dubious Battle had a good cast: Franco as Mac, Ed Harris(in a too small, but very effective role) Nat Wolff, Sam Shepard, Robert Duvall(again, a small, but important role), Vincent D'Onofrio, even Selena Gomez.

Vincent D'Onofrio gave the best performance. He is a good, solid character actor. They get overlooked sometimes because of a flashy lead. You can have a good movie without a flashy lead, you can't without good character actors. As I was watching this, I thought about how, if he had been the actor he is now in the era of The Andy Griffith Show, he could play an uneducated farmer or moonshiner and nail it. But he could also play a rich businessman Andy outsmarts and nail it, too.

I liked this one, maybe not as much as As I Lay Dying, but he stayed true to Steinbeck here.
